Cat Litter Training — Faster Than You Think

Cats are naturally clean and most use a litter box with almost no teaching. The work is in the setup: the right box, the right litter, and a good location.

Set up for success

  • One box per cat, plus one extra, in quiet, accessible spots.
  • Unscented clumping litter suits most cats; avoid strong perfumes.
  • Keep it away from food and water.

Teaching a kitten or new cat

Place the cat in the box after meals and naps. If it goes elsewhere once, move that waste into the box so the scent guides it. Praise, never punish.

Suddenly avoiding the litter box usually means a medical issue (a UTI is common) or stress. Rule out pain before assuming bad behavior.

Stopping accidents

  • Scoop daily; cats reject a dirty box.
  • Keep the box where the cat already goes, then move it gradually.
  • Clean accidents with an enzyme cleaner so the smell does not draw them back.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to litter train a cat?
Most cats and kittens learn within days with a well-placed, clean box — they are naturally inclined to bury waste.
Why is my cat pooping outside the litter box?
Usually a dirty box, a location it dislikes, or a medical issue like a UTI. Clean the box and rule out pain first.
How many litter boxes do I need?
One per cat plus one extra. So two cats do best with three boxes in different spots.
Cat care guidance only. Sudden litter box avoidance warrants a vet check for urinary issues.
