Can Dogs Drink Milk? Usually Not Worth It

Most dogs should skip milk. Adult dogs are commonly lactose intolerant, and a bowl of milk more often leads to gas and diarrhea than any benefit.

Is milk safe for dogs?

A few laps of milk will not harm most dogs, but it is not a good regular drink. As puppies wean, they lose much of the lactase enzyme that digests lactose, so milk sugar ferments in the gut and causes loose stools.

How much, if any

  • A small sip now and then is fine for dogs that tolerate it.
  • Skip it entirely if your dog gets gas or diarrhea from dairy.
  • Plain, unsweetened yogurt or a bit of cheese is often better tolerated than milk.
Puppies need their mother's milk or a proper puppy formula — never cow's milk as a substitute, which lacks the right balance and can upset their stomach.

When to skip

Lactose-intolerant and sensitive dogs should avoid milk. Water remains the best drink for every dog.

Frequently asked questions

Why does milk give dogs diarrhea?
Most adult dogs are lactose intolerant, so the milk sugar ferments and loosens stools.
Can dogs have yogurt instead?
Plain, unsweetened yogurt is often better tolerated than milk and adds probiotics.
Can puppies drink cow's milk?
No — use a proper puppy milk replacer; cow's milk is unbalanced for puppies.
